Saturday Six
Happy Birthday yesterday to my sweet and wonderful hubby! The band rocked out at the Collinsville Italian Fest and then Wink did her own rocking at the marching band competition in O'Fallon. Very fun! (They also did the competition at B'ville East earlier in the day.) They put on a good show at both events.
My first paper is due in English on Tuesday. Ugh. I have to get going on that. But first, I'm going to do the Six...
1. You find out that you've just gotten a new job in a different state. Besides your spouse, who is the first person you tell?
The girls, then my mom. They'd all freak out. =) Except that I would have talked the decision to death for weeks before, so it wouldn't really be a suprise.
2. With the money in your pocket, wallet or purse right now, could you make change for a $20 bill? Could you make change for a $1 bill?
Suprisingly, right now I could make change for the $20, but not the $1... I just cleaned the $6 in change out of my purse that I usually carry.
3. Is this ability (or lack of ability) to make change a typical reflection of how much cash and coins you regularly carry?
Nope, usually I am cash poor. I never carry money... I do everything with the credit card. But I do often have change on me. Quarters for the gum machine and pennies for the fountain.
4. Take the quiz: What mythological character are you?
***You Are a Chimera***
You are very outgoing and well connected to many people.Incredibly devoted to your family and friends, you find purpose in nurturing others. You are rarely alone, and you do best in the company of others. You are incredibly expressive, and people are sometimes overwhelmed by your strong emotions.

5. Are you typically the "heart breaker" or the "broken-hearted" in your relationship history?
You know, I've had my share of both. I've probably ended more relationships than not, though. Like I told my daughter, I wasn't willing to settle... and I'm glad I didn't because I found J.
6. Considering your answer to #5, would you rather be the opposite?
Maybe. Maybe I'd have less guilt when I think about the past. Can't look back, though. Life's too short for that.
On another note, I'm grooving to the new John Mayer CD right now. I love it. I also have a demo of a new Michael Tolcher song on myspace and it's awesome. Can't wait for his new one!
Off to the Home Depot!! Mailboxes and mums. Exciting day ahead...
;)

Six and Seven
On to something a little more fun...
1. How do you feel about a National ID card to replace individual state driver's licenses?
Probably not a bad idea, but the question is probably who gets the funds. That will be what holds it up from happening if the states stand to lose money.
2. Where's the most embarrassing place you've ever fallen asleep?
Hmmm. This is a hard one. I don't have a clear memory of falling asleep somewhere embarrassing. I'm sure I have, but the memory's not there. Probably at some party or something. Chris Baer's house on New Year's, maybe.
3. How long does it take you, when looking at someone for the first time, to determine whether or not you are really attracted to the person?
I don't really think that way anymore, since I have such a great hubby, but back when I was single I think I knew almost immediately. Sometimes I would change my mind once they said something I found offensive, but physical attraction I think you know immediately.
4. Take the quiz: What kind of drunk are you?
You're A Passed Out Drunk
Drinking gives you that warm fuzzy feeling, until you're thrown in the back of a police car...
Kind of true. I've never been in the back of a police car, though. I swear.
5. When is the last time you were really drunk?
When we were in Chicago for my best friend's 40th birthday party. I've been slightly tipsy since then, but not drunk. I'm too old to get drunk anymore... it hurts too bad. For days.
6. What caused the condition: Alcohol or something else?
Vodka. It's always the vodka that does it to me. I should learn my lesson.
Seven:
You're chosen to open a mini-version of Baskin-Robbins. Instead of thirty-one flavors, you're limited to seven. Which favorite flavors would you choose?
1. Vanilla. Gotta have it.
2. Chunky Monkey. Mmmm, bananas.
3. Pistacio
4. Cookies and Creme (with Oreos)
5. Turtle
6. Something with Carmel and Chocolate swirls
7. Bubble gum- it was my favorite when I was a kid.
Yum. I might need some ice cream now. =)

Crushed
I'm naive. Totally. I know it and try to work around it. My daughter is a great kid- smart, helpful, kind to others, funny, interesting to talk to and pretty cute on top of it. Or at least most of the time. My Princess Wink... her sister called her that once. But I'm totally disappointed in my daughter this weekend. She blew it. My last words to her Friday night were "I trust you to make good decisions." And I thought she would. Dorky, I know, but usually guilt is an effective tool. She didn't. I'm horribly angry with her.
But then she had a horrible fight with one of her friends and I feel so awful for her. And disappointed in the friend because I like him a ton. Is it bad that I've grown to like some of her friends so much that I'm upset when she stops hanging with them? This is hard. Now I understand why my mom was so upset when I broke up with Jeff Lagemann. =)
Do I expect too much? Probably. But she's such a great kid and I know what she's capable of and I just want her to do the right thing. Maybe because I know how hard it can turn out to be when you do the wrong. Do I think she's always going to be the good, kind kid that always does the right thing? No. I do understand the pressure that teen-agers put on each other and I know how hard it can be to resist. It really hasn't been that long. Seems like yesterday at some moments. ha.
One of her friends made the comment to me "Don't you want her to make her own mistakes and learn her own lessons?" He wasn't being a smartass, I think he geniunely wanted to know. The answer is as simple as this: not really. Sure, I want her to be a interesting adult with lots of great experiences under her belt, but I think she can do that without drinking or doing drugs or being mean or sleeping around or any of the other dumb things that teenagers think are cool. And it's not out of a need to control her or anything. It's out of love- and fear. I can't bear the thought of her not growing up to be happy and whole. I can't bear the thought of her not realizing her potential. And I can't even fathom the thought of losing her. I'd stop functioning, I think. So if I have to be the over-protective-mom-patrol that every kid hates, well then, so be it. I'll be like the guard at the gate of the princess, slashing down the enemy.
Ha. I kind of like that image.

Trying to get back in the routine of life.
It's interesting to me how in just 3 short months known as summer, all our routines are laid to waste. School has begun and we're in chaos. Well, I'm in chaos... the girls are doing just fine. I just can't seem to get everything together. Well, except spend time with my girlfriends at lunch and on the phone... I'm doing fine with that. =) So I'm sitting here on a Saturday, thinking I need to go to the grocery store, bank and Target. I always do that stuff during the week so I don't have to deal with the teeming masses. Sigh.
ANYWAY, back to routines. I'm easily distracted these days... I got out of the routine of writing because I spent way too much time on the evil that is myspace this summer. It was wonderful. Back in touch with several people that I haven't seen since high school, met some new people that I graduated with, kept in tune with my daughter- well, partially fun, at least. So anyway, since my list is a mile long and I have to go to a band thing this am, I'm at least going to get back in the routine of doing the Saturday Six. He doesn't have it up yet, so I'll do last weeks and maybe tomorrow I'll get up early enough to beat Wink to the computer for a few minutes again.
1. What was the last charity you donated something to? How long ago did you make your last donation?
We donate regularly to our animal shelter that we found our cats at. But I think I made my last donations to ABOB and Move On on the same day last week. (I had a paycheck!)
2. Describe the worst weather event/national disaster that you experienced firsthand.
The flood of 1993. It was crazy.
3. Did the experience you just described change you in any way, (or if you've never experienced such an event firsthand, do you think it would change you significantly)?
We weren't affected by it a great deal. We had water issues, of course, and it took me 2 hours each way to get to work, but we didn't lose our house or anything. I did run into Jason again because of it and that was major change. I do appreciate things like safe water and sewer usuage more than I would have otherwise. And trying to help with saving homes and businesses was life affirming. It's amazing what people can do when they pull together. More than anything it reinforced my sense of community.
4. Take the quiz: What subjects should you have studied in school?
Your Learning Style: Personal and Passionate
You are very flexible and curious about the world. Human understanding is very important to you.You Should Study:
Anthropology
Architecture
Art
Art history
Art therapy
Classics
Counseling
Foreign Languages and Literature
International Studies
Linguistics
Literature
Psychology
Sociology
Teaching
5. Did you actually study or major in any of the courses suggested by the quiz?
Not yet, but I'm going to! Funny that my two "easing back into college" classes are Art and English. I might be a teacher. Maybe...
6. What's your current screen saver? How long have you had it, and what do you like best about it? I have a slideshow of some recent photos from our last two trips and such. It's been a great summer and I'm glad to be reminded of the fun my family had- together, too.
