Too bad I'm not a good enough computer guru to know how to add music notes to the title of this post. I bet Wink would know how.
So here's a list of some of my favorite things of 2005. It's not in order, nor is it probably complete. Just what I'm thinking of as I finish my first cosmo of the evening and wait for our steaks to be done!
-Liz Phair: Somebody's Miracle. My favorite album of the year. I listened to it over and over and over.
-Blessid Union of Souls: Perception. I ran across this when I was Christmas shopping. So glad the guys are back!
- Michael Tolcher. I know his cd "I Am" came out last year, but I saw him live 3 times this year and he was incredible each time. One of my favorite artists to see live.
- Grey's Anatomy. I have spent the majority of the last 5 years watching reality tv, so I was shocked when I got hooked on this show. Now I can't wait to see Meredith and George hook up!
- Project Runway. I hopped on this bandwagon late, but I can't wait to find out who will win. Even Heidi doesn't annoy me that much.
- Reunion. My favorite of the fall shows. I. am. so. sad.
-Dawson's Creek on DVD. For some odd reason, Wink and I started watching these together in November. I'm remembering all over why I loved this show. And why I can't believe Katie Holmes is in love with Tom Cruise. Ick.
- Wil Wheaton. He lost me for a while there with all of the poker stuff, but since he's been in exile, he's been writing things that remind me why I've loved reading his site since 2000 or so. And his "battle" with Annie and Shane is hilarious.
- pinkisthenewblog.com. My favorite place to get the celebrity gossip. I hope Trent gets all of the good things coming to him. He seems to really just be having fun, unlike some of the other sites out there that have become all mean and stuff (not naming names, of course.)
- Dan Renzi. I wish I knew this guy. We could be friends, I know it.
- Post Secret. The website and art exibit and book. Fascinating. Makes you think about your own secrets.
- Old friends. I guess it's because we're reaching 'a certain age' or whatever, but I've been lucky enough to be in contact with several of my friends from grade and high school. Some, I've redeveloped relationships with, others I'm just glad to know they are doing well. Either way, it's nice to be reminded of the people who have been important to me and why they are so great.
I'm sure there are more, but for now I'm going to enjoy the company of my family and ring in the new year. Because they are really my favorite part of 2005!
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year's Eve
How easy it is to get busy and forget about doing things you enjoy doing just for yourself. It's been that kind of year. Amazing to me that it's the last day of 2005. Already.
I wonder what 2006 will bring. Hopefully, more good and happy and busy days. I'll take it.
I'm going to try to make a "best of" list today... I love that kind of stuff.
I have to make it to the mall to get a new calendar today... very important to me to start the new year with a fresh calendar. I'm weird like that. It's all symbolic and stuff. =)
Right now, E is asking for help writing "I love you, Mom."
Can't ask for anything better than that.

Update
My Grams' brother has been found alive and well!
He and his son, Donald, left New Orleans on Sunday and didn't get to Lancaster, TX- where his daughter lives- until Saturday. They had some car problems, but it sounds like the roads were crazy going north.
Thank goodness, they are both well.

Hurrican Katrina hits close to home...
Yes, I know I live in Illinois.
My grandmother's family is from McComb, Mississippi and several of her close relatives live in Louisiana. Her brother, who's name is James Ford Nettles, lives in Belle Chaisse. He has three kids Ronnie, Diane and Donald. Grams has not been contacted by any of them. If anyone has any information, please let me know.
Grams is pretty sure that Ford, who is 84, wouldn't have left his home. She thinks he's just stubborn enough to think he can wait it out and make it. I sure hope he did.
I'm one of those people who cry at the Campbell's soup and Hallmark commercials, so watching this unfold on tv is gut-wrenching. I feel like I need to do something to help, but other than donating money, I'm not sure where to start. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragedy.
I'll talk about the stupid people who loot, rape, set fires and shoot at the people trying to help them later.
The good news is that Grams has heard from her niece in Baton Rouge and other than lack of electricity and a shortage of cash, they're all doing fine. Thank goodness.
I'm going to take a moment to hug my daughters and husband, tell them that I love them; look around the home that I sometimes complain is too small and give thanks for it. I'm a lucky woman.

Six... and actually on a Sat
1. What is your current desktop picture? What made you select it?
A really great picture of Ali and Erin at the Aquarium in Seattle. I selected it because they actually look like they like each other.
2. A close friend who you consider to be up to date on fashion suggests that you should update your look and offers to pay for a session with an experienced hairstylist you've never dealt with before. Knowing that it's free, would you go?
Um, yeah. It's free and it's only hair.
3. When you do look in a mirror, what is the first thing you usually look at?
Definately my hair. I'm always worried it looks funky- or that you can see my greys too much.
4. Take this quiz: Which Bugs Bunny character are you? http://www.okcupid.com/tests/take?testid=481494329074504659
Bugs Bunny!
You scored 0 Aggression, 85 Sophistication, and 85 Optimism!
You have all the sophistication and charm one would expect from such a high-class hare. Very upbeat and generally laid-back, you are remarkably calm and peaceful even in the midst of the most stressful of situations. On those rare occasions that your anger is aroused, your retaliation usually results in embarrassing the aggressor and laying-bare how foolish he or she really is -- rather than doing any real harm. You likely have many friends and more than a few admirers and would make an excellent leader, if you had any interest in being one. But, being a leader would require hard work and attention to detail, both qualities you are lacking in. In fact, if you are not careful, your laid-back attitude will often lead you to drift through life completely oblivious to the changes happening around you. You also tend to have a horrible sense of direction.
5. What label seems to describe you the best as a whole?
Busibody? =) Probably Mom... I just like to take care of people and fix things. I can't help it.
6. READER'S CHOICE QUESTION #60 from Stacy: Is there a specific person that you credit with your successes? and HOW did they help you?
I'd have to say my Dad. He always backed me up, told me he believed in me, helped me pick up the pieces if I failed. He just generally made me feel cherished, like I deserved the best. My hubby is alot like him, too.

Wow...
Has it really been 3 weeks since I posted last? That's crazy.
School starts tomorrow. Not sure if that will help or not, but I'm looking forward to it.

Saturday Six 8/20/05
Here's the latest Saturday Six. I'm trying to get thru my BTS projects.... more later.
1. Other than the "Saturday Six," what weekly or daily memes do you play most often? (Please give a link to that journal.)
Nope, this is it.
2. If you could look back at photos you know of that were taken during your childhood, from your first school pictures to snapshots taken ten years ago, which one do you think would be the most embarrassing and why?
I think 8th grade. Bad, short unevenly curled hair. Braces. Lots of Braces, goofy grin. Pink and gray wide stripe sweater. Ugh. Freshman wasn't much better. What in the hell was I thinking to perm my hair?!!@!
3. What was the last thing you made yourself do, even though you really didn't want to?
I took both girls to Target today. It's not that I didn't want to go to Target. I live for Target. But both girls at Target is not fun. In fact, both girls ANYplace, is not much fun these days.
4. Take this quiz: How do you live your life? ( http://www.blogthings.com/howdoyouliveyourlifequiz/ )
How You Life Your Life
You are honest and direct. You tell it like it is.
You're laid back and chill, but sometimes you care too much about what others think.
You prefer a variety of friends and tend to change friends quickly.
You tend to always dream of things within reach - and you usually get them.
5. What was the last book you started but never finished (aside from any you're currently reading)? Why did you stop reading it?
Hmmm. This is a tough one. I almost always finish books. I don't think I ever finished "How to Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems"... maybe that's why we're still having problems. =) But I didn't finish it because I didn't like the methods in it.
6. Are you named after anyone? Has anyone ever been named after you?
My middle name, Christine, was after my Mom's best friend and my godmother (who passed away a few years after I was born.) Noone has ever been named after me, but a friend's brother named their daughter after Ali.

How well do you know yourself?
One day a few months ago, I was cruising the information highway that I waste all of my time on and ran across this blog. www.journals.aol.com/pattboy92/patricksplace
He has a second site now at www.patricks-place.blogspot.com
Anyway, he has this great list of questions every Saturday that he calls the Saturday Six. Over the last few months, I've taken the time to check it out most weekends and answer them for myself. I've even sent a few on to friends. They are fun, always make me think and most times make me laugh out loud. Some of the questions are skewed towards aol journals users, but since I'm a lurker and not a poster, that's ok with me.
So, this is this weeks set...
1. What was your favorite childhood movie? When was the last time you saw it?
2. Who is your worst enemy at the moment? (First names only please) Why is that person your enemy?
3. Which one of the following annoys you the most when you encounter a new blog?
a. Constant grammatical errors.
b. Constant spelling errors.
c. Contrived "street" language.
d. Too many "nothing happening today" entries.
4.Take this quiz. Which alcoholic drink are you?
5.What is the last thing you said to a person face to face? Who was that person?
READER'S CHOICE QUESTION #59 from Debi: When you shower, do you ever think of the Alfred Hitchcock movie, "Psycho?"
My answers:
1. It depends on which stage of childhood. Wizard of Oz, which sounds boring, but I remember watching it with my mom on TV every year. I watched it just 2 days ago (twice) with Eezers. Where the Red Fern Grows was a favorite in 3rd-4th grade and I rented it for Wink when she was a little older than that (after I made her read the book). Star Wars, of course. Which the DH makes, um, asks us to watch on a regular basis. Bad News Bears, which I rented a couple years ago and then wouldn't let Wink finish watching because it was so much more foul than I remembered. And Sixteen Candles from middle school, which I got from Netflix a couple of weeks ago, as we entered the 'mom's nostalgia' part of the list. I know it's alot, but these are major memories.
2. Enemy? I can't really think of one, except myself.
3. C. That and too many sexual references will take a blog off my favorites list in a second.
4. The quiz is at www.quizilla.com and I'm a cocktail.
5. "Sure." to Eezer's request for an after lunch cupcake.
R.C. Not while I'm showering, but I have thought about it while showing a vacant house. I don't think I've ever made it thru that whole movie.
The movie question was fun for me. I hadn't thought about watching Wizard of Oz with my mom every year for a long time. We'd make homemade popcorn and curl up on the couch in our pj's to watch it together. Back in the days before VCRs and DVDs, when you couldn't just watch a movie whenever you wanted to. That long ago. You know, you do the teenage angst stuff and after that it sometimes takes a few years (or 20) to remember the fun that you had with your parents when you were a kid. It's good to remember. I hope my kids do when they get older. (cross fingers)
I walked today... about a mile. That's the second time this week. I like how I feel when I make time to exercise, but don't do it often enough. I'm trying to fix that. Wish me luck.

Trying to be organized...
As hard to believe as that is. School starts Aug. 22 for both girls. I'm buying school supplies and trying to be as prepared as possible.
The reason: I'm president of the PTA next year. Not sure what I was thinking. And now I'm lying awake at night, afraid that I'm going to screw it up. I know it's a volunteer thing. I know I don't take home a paycheck from this. But what I take home is my daughter's pride and recongnition and that means more than a paycheck would. And those moms are mean! If I mess it up, I'm in trouble.
Scared.
If I begin the year organized, maybe that will help. At least that's what I'm telling myself. So I'm up at 1 am, making lists.
I'm headed for burn out, and we still have a month before school.
Sad.

George Bush proves me right.
When Sandra Day O'Conner stepped down from the Supreme Court, I had a discussion with a friend about W's choices. Though we're on different ends of the political spectrum, we agreed that this was his legacy. He had the chance to make a difference with his nominee and should nominate a woman or a person of Hispanic origin. I thought that he would probably, because of Roe v. Wade, would nominate a man, but would nominate the first Hispanic to the Supreme Court. On an aside, I dropped, "Only if he wants to prove that he has the "power" will he nominate a white male. Which he'll probably do."
She took offense, going off on how he had more women and minorities on his cabinet... yada, yada, yada.
I WAS RIGHT!
What a slap in the face to all of us moderate Americans. Now, I am definately liberal-leaning, but am committed to figuring out how to elect officials that will, above all, work together to help our country grow and be safe. Whether they be the Dem or Rep side, if they make sense, I'll support them. I believe that most Americans want Congress to quit wasting the taxpayers time fighting with each other and get back to work doing what we pay them to do. It's like they're on the playground and can't play well together in D.C. these days.
Which is very frustrating to me.
So, W is proving to me that he's not interested in the Americans like me... only in people like him.
And don't even get me started about Rove.

BTW-
No reality related news- because THERE'S NOTHING ON!
And I don't care about Tom and Katie. I don't. I will not.
And I don't care about Tom and Katie. I don't. I will not.
I want to be a part of it...
New York, New York.
What an awesome weekend. I'm still catching up from it, but it was sure worth it.
A brief synopsis...
Thursday the DH had his dinner so I hung out with the friend of his co-worker, who was very cool. After, we had romantic cocktails and dessert in the hotel lounge.
Friday, we met our friends Doug and Laura and checked out the newly redone MOMA. It was an incredible day. What I love most about Art museums is the silence. People are so respectful in the presence of great art. Starry, Starry Night blew me away. And Warhol's Campbell Soup cans made me laugh- with him, I'd like to think.
Great Thai food for lunch in this little place right across from the museum and then D & L had to do real-life stuff so we headed back to the hotel to get ready for the show we had tickets to.
And what an awesome show it was. The Light in the Piazza at the Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center. Wow. The only word to describe it. The story was heart-tugging, the singing incredible, the setting perfect. I cried thru the last half. Couldn't help it. It's a love story, but more than that, it's the story of a mother's love for her daughter- and that's what I got. I loved it.
The best meal I've ever eaten after at Triatorria Del'Arte across from Carnegie Hall. Pistachio and champagne pound cake... yum.
Friday was one of the best days of my life... just perfect.
Sat was another great day. We hung with Doug and checked out the East Village. It's great to have a friend who has the same beginning as you, but who's life is so different from yours now. It makes for fun story telling and retelling. I'm more appreciative of old friends as I get older. Thank goodness Laura is patient with us, I'm sure she's heard most of our high school stories a million times. But she loves Doug a great deal, so she puts up with us. =) And we love her for it. Besides the fact that she's soo incredibly cool. She always helps me pick out cool stuff for Wink. (And Wink loves her for that.)
Anyway, a wonderful night, soaking in our NY fix and Sunday am we were off for home.
Sigh. Good stuff.

Frustration and Excitement...
This week has been a study of both.
I have the deal from hell going on right now. Anything that could go wrong has. To protect the anonymity of my clients (and my career), I'd never say any specifics- BUT what I never understand is why people don't take personal responsibility for their financial decisions. People, buying a house is the biggest investment you will make- make informed decisions! Interview real estate agents, make sure you like the one you work with. (Though, please don't string several along. We only get paid on commission, if you remember.) Then, when your real estate agent gives you 3-5 business cards for a mortgage lender, do the same thing. Know what your options are. Find the one that can do what you need. Sure, I'll tell you who I've liked working with in the past, but don't take only my word on it- talk to several. Make your own decisions!!! And if it doesn't work out... Remember that you made the decision. I am a real estate agent... not a miracle worker. So please don't turn it into my fault that didn't pay that credit card bill 6 years ago or that the house you want will not go FHA. I only give advice. Whether you take it or not is up to you. You are in charge of your financial decisions!
Ok, now that that's out of my system, I feel better. Thanks.
The excitement is that in about 12 hours I'll be on my way to New York City for the weekend! I can't wait! The DH has an award's banquet on Thursday night. (Yeah, they give awards for the best bullshitter at the PR awards. =)) Then Friday, we plan on spending the day with our friend Doug and seeing The Light on the Piazza that night. Saturday, it will be more NY fun with Doug and his lovely wife Laura. We did a visit about 18 months ago and we've been looking forward to getting back since then. Hopefully, I'll have some good stories. I swear I'm going to see a celebrity this time, if I have to stake out Butter.
So... the really important stuff- My favorite couple was sent home on 'Beauty and the Geek'. I loved Joe and Erica- or is it Erika, I don't know. I thought she seemed smarter than she gave herself credit for and I just think Joe seems like a great guy, cooler than he gives himself credit for. The massage sequence tonight made me wince, though. It just seemed like they made it seem more awkward than it really was. We're watching, Ashton- quit editing things to make them seem worse than they really are. Oh, and did anyone notice that even though Erika (it's a k, I checked) went on and on about cutie Brad, he did not make one comment about her? Hmmm. Wonder what that means. Maybe he's a player.
Least favorite geek: Richard. Least favorite chick: Mindi or Lauren, can't decide, they both bug me. I have alot less patience for the girls that say mean thing behind the guys backs than the guys. I love geeky guys... always have.
I don't even know whether or not to comment on 'Dancing with the Stars'.... I was sorry to see Trista go, but that's all I caught was the elimination, not the dancing. (I had to pack) I'm not sure that one is going to hold my attention very long.
I read on Dan's site that he was eliminated from The Inferno, but I haven't' seen it yet. He's the only reason I ever watched it, so that will probably be the end of that one, too. I can't stand to watch Julie if I don't have Dan to balance her out.
That's all... have to get a few hours of sleep before we head to the airport!
NYC here I come... every bit of midwestern-reality addicted- celebrity obsessed- me!
I can't wait!

I love "Geek"
I can NOT believe that I'm saying this.
I loved 'Beauty and the Geek'. I thought it was entertaining without being overly exploitive, with a positive message at the end. Nicely done, so far.
Joe- the 'geek' who won the elimination round on the Outkast question- has a cool blog here:(www.joehanson.blogspot.com) and he said that the hesitation on the hip-hop questions was pure editing. A little disappointing to me. If they want to break down stereotypes, what's better to do that than a 'geek' with an affection for hip-hop? Poor guy, though, that they label him with the not-very-nice label of 'never been on a date'. Not for long, Joe! Not for long. (Though I really don't think it's as bad as the 'VP of the Dukes of Hazzard fan club'- call me crazy.)
Hopefully, they keep it up-

I forgot to say how much I love Michael Tolcher...
Totally forgot to post about the incredible concert that Dawn and I went to on Tuesday night.
I have to clarify that I'm not often out partying on weeknights. This was a special occasion that I'm still paying for, but totally worth it.
Carbon Leaf and Michael Tolcher were at Blueberry Hill ( www.blueberryhill.com) in University City. They have this smallish room in the basement that has great accoustics. I had never seen a show there, so we weren't sure of what to expect, but we had the best time.
We were running later than we had expected, but still managed to get a spot leaning against one of the bars lining the side wall. Right next to the equipment. Stay with me, this will be important later. A dude with a mohawk and a guitar started us off. Sorry, didn't catch his name. He was ok... trying a little to hard to catch and keep the audiences attention. But not bad.
Next was Carbon Leaf (www.carbonleaf.com), who I had not heard of before. I guarantee that I know more about them now. They had a big following there. And they were awesome. Great set and NICE... nice, nice, nice afterwards. All of them were friendly and I'm not a 21 yr old in a low cut top, you know. Dawn talked to them about playing our Expo in the fall. That would be cool.
So as Dawn is talking to the lead singer from CL, Michael Tolcher (www.michaeltolcher.com) walks by. I had seen him earlier at the bar talking to a chicky, but I'm not usually one to talk to famous or semi-famous people when I see them. I'm dorky about that stuff. We had been talking to the couple standing next to us (Hi, Kendall and Nick!) who just so happened to be from the same town we are. So, Nick grabbed his sleeve and said, "She wants to say hi." about Kendall. Michael turned and smiled and said "Hi, I'm Michael." They talked for a moment and then he turned to me and said, "I'm Michael." and I froze. "I'm Amy and I love your music." was all I got out. He was cool and said that he hoped we enjoyed the show. Kendall and I were jumping up and down like middle schoolers. It was so funny. Dawn was bumming when she got back.
I have to say, though, that he looked really tired. (I'm a mom.) Get some sleep, Michael! But the show was great! He just rocked.
Alas, it was over at 1... and I was up 4 hours past my bedtime. But it was worth it!
Sure can't party like I used to.

Meh.
Carrie.
Not suprised, not excited. Not really anything. This is the first year in 4 that I'm just nothing about the winner of American Idol.
I knew from the beginning that Simon had picked Carrie to be the winner. In interviews before the show even aired, he said there was a girl he thought would win it all. Good business accumen? Fixed? Who knows.
I know the powers that be at AI are probably hoping to repeat Kelly's success, but what they are discounting is that Kelly has a personality. And I'm just not sure about Carrie yet.
Bo will do well, though. I think Vonzell will have a deal, possibly Anthony, too. I'm hoping Nikko, too. Scott, Mikahla, Lyndsay, Nadia will probably disappear after the tour. Which, also for the first time in 4 years, I'm not planning on attending.
Ok, I'm disappointed that what I thought was going to be the best season ever ended with a wimper. Can't help it. And now all my reality finales are done and I have nothing to watch.
Sigh. I need a life.

End of the School Year Crazies
Ok... so I forgot to post. For weeks. I have an excuse, really.
Wait, no one else reads this, so I don't have to make excuses! Yeah!
Anyway, we have the end of the school year crazies. Band concerts, chorus concerts, Honors Banquet, field trips, dance recitals, PTA mtgs, etc. I'm ready for next Thursday when all I'll have to do is put up with both kids 24 hours a day... oh wait, did I mean that?
So... Reality TV has also been keeping me busy.
American Idol... Bo's my man. I didn't like him much at first- actually, I'm still not sure I love him- but I hated Carrie from the very beginning. I loved Nikko and when he was voted off the 2nd time, I lost interest. I was rooting for Vonzell, but my favorite never wins. Not Justin, not Kimberly, not JPL. I guess it doesn't matter... hey, maybe I should root for Carrie. A little reverse psychology.
I'm ashamed to admit it, but I actually watched the Bachelor finale. I stayed true to my vow and didn't watch any others, but, ok, it was LIVE, people. I was waiting for the train wreck to happen. That said, I was fairly impressed with how Charlie handled everything. And Krisily... I loved her! I think she was everything I'd want to be in that situation.
Anyway, Charlie and Sarah B... 6 months is my prediction- or whenever he gets tired of not having any balls.
(Oops, did I write that? Hope my 13 yr old doesn't read this.)
America's Next Top Model was good this time. Not as good as last cycle with Eva the Diva, who I like even better now due to the "My Life As A Cover Girl" propaganda, but good. I so wanted Kahlen to win, but I agree that Naima had an edge that got notice. I think the reason Kahlen lost was her answer to the "Why should we pick you?" question. C'mon girls, they want you to say because I'm the bomb, because I will rule the industry. Not the I think I'm so ugly stuff. Blech. Noone believes that you think you're ugly. NOONE. Not even 'buy every sob-story' me.
I missed the Survivor finale! I can't believe it. That's the first time ever. I have to admit, once Ulong... or was it Koror? ... started the losing EVERY damn thing, it was kind of depressing for me. I thought, at the beginning, that this was going to be one of the best Survivors ever, but it just wasn't at Australia level for me. Of course, it might just be a victim of all of those Thursday night concerts and banquets. But I am glad that, for once, someone who seemed to deserve it won... I would have screamed if Katie would have won. I mean, Amber? Jenna? Sandra? Vecepia? Please.
So, on a final note, we saw Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith today. DH was super excited. We're all sci-fi geeks. Weird. Wink had seen it on Friday with friends so all weekend I had to do the "la la la, I don't want to know" thing with her, but she went with us today, too. I can't believe I'm saying this, but-
IT WAS AWESOME!
Now, I have a few issues with it, but as far as entertainment value, I loved it. I cried thru most of it. Wink made fun of me, but I was invested in those characters- bad emoting and all.
Poor Padme.
Sigh.
Happy Sunday.

I heart Oprah!
Oh my goodness! What a trip!
Oprah is my hero... she is just so cool.
Now, I went into this with no expectations... or little, at least. I had heard some stories. But it was AWESOME!
My friend, Christine, and I left home around 3 on Tuesday to do the 4-5 hour trip to Chicago. Not far enough to drive... just about perfect for a road trip. We had a nice time on the way up and got there a little after 7. Checked into our 4 star hotel that I got for a great rate on priceline.com and went down to Navy Pier for dinner. My friend Marc is a manager at the Be-Bop down there and I was hoping to see him. Now, of course I was not organized enough to call in advance and let him know that I'd be there. So, of course, we missed him... by 30 minutes. And the resteraunt was closed for a private party, so we ate at Bubba Gumps. I'm not a seafood fan, but the food was good, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was fun. Try the margaritas. Yum. And then we crashed. At 10.
Up the next day at 5... ugh. I am so not a morning person. Tried to make ourselves lovely for tv. Hopped in a cab and headed to Harpo Studios. We met her friends, Brooke and Crystal, there at the studios. Waited an hour or so and then headed in. For more waiting.
We met some nice people in line from Virginia and more nice people waiting. Actually, I was surprised at how friendly and talkative everyone was. It was cool. I love meeting new people.
You have no idea in advance what the show is, but some people had been called because they were fans of certain people. Some of those people were doing more detective work than Matlock!
So we're called in to take our seats and a producer grabs us and seats us in the third row on the side! We were so close! Must be the bright colors we were all wearing. Everyone is seated and the show producer comes in and is hyping everything. She had on great Chanel mary-janes that I loved.
Out comes Oprah, and let me tell you, she is tiny! And she had on great shoes, too. Probably 800 dollar great shoes, but they were beautiful. I was coveting those shoes.
The show starts and we're all clapping and yelling and it was such an adrenaline rush. I should have been in show-biz, I loved it.
It was a "wildest dream" show and it was sad and fun and amazing all in one.
It airs tomorrow and I'll write more then... look for me on the right side of the stage in the coral jacket!

Back from the Land of Computerlessness
So, somehow, some horrible way, I contracted a virus last week. A frickin virus. (And as Wink will tell you, I don't like that word.) And I'm careful. I don't open attachments, I update my virus protection regularly. I practice safe e-contact. Sigh.
I don't know how people who know little about computers (like me) ever get anything fixed. You have to go here and delete that and delete this and it still doesn't work! For about 24 hours, I tried to pretend that I was actually going to be able to fix it myself. I really worked hard on it- and nothing. So I asked (begged) the dear hubby to help. Now, he knows what he's doing- he's a virtual computer guru- and it still took him almost 24 hours. Thank goodness for my dear hubby. I appreciate all he does, but I really love that he can fix my computer. =) So, to all of the idiots that write viruses: I know you are bored with your pitiful, pathetic existences, but CUT IT OUT! Can't we just all get along?
So in honor of my return, here are a few of my favorite places on the internet. These are the ones I missed while I was gone.
Wil Wheaton ( http://www.wilwheaton.net/ ) The first blog I ever read and still the best.
Dan Renzi (http://danrenzi.typepad.com/stuff/) Former Real World-er, great writer, funny guy.
Pink is the New Blog (http://trent.blogspot.com/) The best place for celebrity gossip.
PostSecret (http://postsecret.blogspot.com/) I just found this...
Reality Blurred (http://www.realityblurred.com/) Reality tv news and thoughts
TVGasm (http://www.tvgasm.com/) More great tv stuff.
There are several more that I read all the time, but these are my favorites.
Speaking of trips, I'm headed to Chicago on Tuesday! Just for a day, but I love Chicago. Some friends and I are going to see a taping of Oprah on Wednesday! (Thanks to my friend Chris!) We're going to road trip it and hopefully have dinner at my friend Marc's resteraunt on Tues night. Then we'll go to the taping Wed am and do a whirlwind lunch and shopping tour and head back. Should be fun and fun! I'm so excited, I've been wanting to see an Oprah taping for years.
Also, we just found out that the DH has to head to NYC for an awards dinner in June. (I'm proud.)So, hopefully, we'll be making a long weekend of it! I heart NY.
Have a great Sunday!

I heart St Louis
So... I just reread my past post about the Eezers story that I didn't want to forget to tell, which, of course, I did.
So during our vacation-at-home we had a great time doing all the fun things that St. Louis has to offer. RaRa was here from Alaska and we had fun and fun. On Friday, J's first day off work, we picked up Wink early from school and headed downtown. We had lunch at Max & Erma's (excellent burgers- try the onion rings and tortilla soup, too) and decided we had enough nourishment to attempt The City Museum. (www.citymuseum.org)
Oh My Goodness, it was so much fun. This place is incredible. Just the decor is enough to keep you busy for hours and that's not even the main event. There are tunnels and pathways and lots of places to explore. There is a circus section, an art section, an archetectural museum, a World Aquarium section and this great outdoor section called MonstroCity. Oh, and slides, lots of slides.
MonstroCity has all of this great recycled stuff: a firetruck, 2 airplanes, a parachute, lots of walkways and metal turned into tunnels. At the very top, 5 stories up is the entrance to the slide... which is of course what Eezers wanted to do first.
Now, I don't do heights. Not well, at least. So I'm down a about the 2 story height, checking things out, and I look up to see Eezers in the wire tunnel between the plane and the enterance to the slide- 5 stories up! Pink skirt flapping in the wind. Holding on to the sides, calmly walking thru it like it was no big deal. J was behind her at the entrance to the tunnel, but he didn't want to put to much pressure on the tunnel at one time since it was made out of wire!
I was so scared for her, but impressed by her bravery. She didn't even think to be afraid of it.
When she came down the slide, I asked if she was scared at all and she said, "Nope. It was fun and fun."
I want to be like her.
The video is hilarious, RaRa and I both going on and on about how they need to get down and then Wink comes up and she's doing the same thing.
Wimpies- all of us.
That night we had a room downtown, so we swam and then had a good dinner at The Spaghetti Factory on Laclede's Landing. Then we crashed. I haven't slept that well in months.
The next day we went to the zoo. How lucky are we to have such a great place to go... and it's FREE. I've been to quite a few zoos around the country, most of which charge admission, and none of them have been as good as the St Louis Zoo. And... they sell beer now, too!
Which is not the draw, of course. So we drug our tired butts around the zoo for a few hours and then went home and had carry out for dinner. Johnson's Corner chicken- good stuff.
Then on Sunday, we went back to Forest Park for brunch at Puck's at The Art Museum. Yum! We love the chocolate chip waffles. Another fab free attraction in Forest Park.
We thought about The Missouri Botanical Gardens or The Butterfly House for Monday, but decided we'd save some of that for RaRa's visit in October. I think we were still tired from The City Museum.
Anyway, lots of fun and fun and I didn't want to forget it.

Purple Day...
Eezers has a little bit of trouble with her R's. Nothing big, and nothing I'm calling a speech therapist for yet, but noticeable. We've all kind of picked up on some of the 'Eezer words' over the last 4 years. Foo Fies, Boo Byes, Darth Nader: all additions to our vocab.
She has an excellent vocabulary, but she's frustrated by the 'r' thing. So yesterday, after the yard work, I was sitting in the kitchen drinking a glass of water. Eezers came up to me and said, "Listen Mom, PURPLE." Clear as day and with the R. She was tickled and now every other word out of her mouth is purple.
We have declared today to be Purple Day. We're going to wear purple and plant purple flowers and eat purple food and paint with purple.
Hope you have a purple kind of day.

Lots of crazies...
Crazy things going on in my life right now. I should be sleeping, but I can't seem to make it there.
Allergies, heartburn, headache... I'm such a hypocondriac.
Have you ever noticed that when you're on vacation, you're always tired. Yep, me too.
It's supposed to be restful. Not with a 4 year old.
I have a great Eezers story to tell, but I've got to do it later. I don't want to forget it.
Sweet dreams.

I did it!
I made it thru a Monday without watching the Bachelor. And I made it thru a Tuesday without reading the message boards. This is a big step in kicking my addiction.
It helps that I was working like a dog to clean my house for a familial visit. And now that it's here I won't have time either. Yay!
On a serious note, I exchanged emails with a very good friend from forever, who told me another school friend is sick. Nate was always one of the nicest, most sincere people I knew. So send good mojo his way as he tackles chemo. I am.
It was nice to touch base with my friend Joe. We keep in touch sporadically, but it's nice to know there's someone out there who cares who knew you when you wore Garanimals. I'm lucky he still acknowledges me. I was not very nice for some of my formative years. When I think of what a jerk I was. Well, the nightmares still get me.
At least now I'm only snarky to people on TV.
;)

Amazing...
I have admitted that I'm a reality tv junkie... so it should be no suprise that I watch 2 shows on Tuesday... American Idol and Amazing Race. I have to admit that I missed the first half of AI, Eezers has dance class on Tues, so we're dealing with that conflict. I saw Nikko, Anwar, Bo and Nadia. And I thought they were all good. I am impressed with this group. I think they all have talent and possiblities. Except Scott, who has creeped me out from the very beginning and Constantine, who creeps me out more and more each week. Oh, and I almost forgot, Carrie, who-no matter what Simon says-is completely forgettable to me. So I'm sitting here redialing Nikko's # and trying to type at the same time . It's a Lou thing...
But the Amazing Race is truly amazing this year. It might be the mix of people or the locations... or just that I love to watch Rob-n-Amber be their snarky selves. But I think it's really fun this season. I'm a late comer to AR, this is only the 3rd race I've watched, but I understand why it's won awards and such. It's an interesting show every time. Anyway, Go Rob and Amber! Show them what synergy means!
Wink and I went to the free concert downtown this weekend. It was soooo much fun. I was very proud of the area that I live in as I walked thru Keener Plaza and watched peolple snack on St. Louis style pizza, toasted ravs and pork steak sandwiches. The city looked great- clean and impressive. The artists at the Dasani fest were excellent... I heart Michael Tolcher. Check him out at www.michaeltolcher.com . He's awesome. After was Better Than Ezra, who I knew very little about before Sunday. I liked them alot. They did this cool thing when they pulled a kid out of the audience and had him play the guitar along with them. I came out of it thinking they were really cool people. Next was Gavin Degraw (www.gavindegraw.com ) who we love tons. He was good... though not as good as he was at the Pageant when we saw him in January. We were lucky enough to get to sit in on the sound check and meet him after and he was incredibly nice.
After that we decided it was too hot and we were too sunburned and tired of paying $3.00 for water, so we skipped Joss Stone and Kelly Clarkson. Not sad at all, we had a great time. My daughter and I had a ball together, which I appreciate more and more as she gets older. I'm so lucky.
Gotta go, Winks reading over my shoulder. I'm going to try to link photos, but who knows if I'll be able to make it happen.

C O'C
Ick, Ick, Ick... that's all I can say about this season's Bachelor. Thanks for the memories, ABC, but I'm done.

The Pope, Terri Shiavo and my Dad...
1st, I'm incredibly sad to hear about the Pope. I'm not a religious person- now, I did not say I was not a spiritual person, but I'm not big into organized religion- but even I realize the contributions that he made to the world in the last 26 years. I saw the Pope years ago, when he visited St. Louis. I'm not sure of the year, but it was in the late 80's (since I could drive and he had the bullet-proof glass around him). I do remember the excitement of the crowd, the buzz that was in the air. And then his car came around the corner and there was this hush, almost like the calm in the eye of the storm. He looked smaller than I expected, but regal in a way, also happy. He had- now I know this is going to sound dorky- a light around him and he looked very happy. It was an experience that I'm glad I had, glad that I made time for in my teen-age existence.
2nd, I'm very relieved that Terri Schiavo is at peace now. Everytime I heard or read something about it, I just wanted to scream. At her parents, at the politicians who think they know something about which they know nothing, at the media, who has turned this woman's life and suffering into a circus. So unfair. Just my opinion, but I feel that some of why her parents fought so hard was to get back at her husband for going on with his life. But do you really think that if Terri loved her husband, she would have wanted him to be alone for the rest of his life? I don't think so. If my DH was left without me, I'd want him to find love again... After a few dozen years, of course. =)
One of the best things I've read about this was on a blog at here: http://journals.aol.com/englishqueen1202/ImJustaWomaninSearchofDefinition/
(I'm not sure if I could get in trouble for linking that, but I doubt it since noone else reads this!)
It's one of the most moving things I've read pertaining to this story. It made me realize that the reason I get so angry about this 'story' (which I hate to call it that because it is real people), is because I identify with it.
In, 1998, on my 29th birthday, my Dad was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the blood cells that affects... well, everything, but it starts with the bones. Dad had cracked his shoulder blade working and it wouldn't heal. It was a long process to come up with a diagnosis, so while there was horror at what it was, there was some relief that we knew what we had to fight.
I can't go into too many details about the next 18 months, partially because it's all still a blur, and partially because I have to work in the morning, but after many rounds of chemo and radiation, Dad agreed to do an experimental procedure. They took the bad bone marrow out, cleaned it up and put it back in. The problem was that they had to take Dad all the way to nothing on his white blood count or the antibodies would reject the 'new' marrow. We all knew it was risky, but my Dad was the kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back, so if he had a chance to help someone else, he was going to do it.
So, to make a long story short, 3 weeks later, he's still hooked up to a ventilator and the doctors don't think that he'll ever breathe on his own again. I can't even begin to describe the pain we went thru. My step mom, who is one of the bravest people I know, and I were both basket cases. Dad helped us, though, because he had a living will. And we had talked about every situation. We knew that he didn't want to be kept alive artificially, if there was no chance of him getting off the machines on his own, we were to take him off of them.
My Daddy was one of the most incredible, lovable, full of life, no-nonsense people you would have ever wanted to know. And keeping him hooked to all those tubes and machines against his will was like denying he was the person he was. He gave me so much, in character and values and morals and fun and zest for life, that I was not going to be the person to deny him his desire to die with what he felt was dignity.
So, to the people who disagree with me about whether Terri's husband did the right thing, I don't care what you think. Until you have watched someone you love suffer like he has, I don't think you can judge him... or me.

Recovering...
So, I'm finally recovering from my Bachelorette induced rage. I really think I'm over it... but, I'll tell you, it was touch and go for a while. I'm really embarrassed by how into this season I was... I agree with all the people out there that this was the most boring season EVAH, but I couldn't help myself... I was invested in Jen. I had rooted for her on Andrew's season and was sooo sad when they broke up. You know, like when your cousin breaks up with that girl you liked so much... that kind of sad. And then... a ray of hope... she was going to be the Bachelorette. Now, I questioned her decision. I didn't (at the time) think she was a fameho. I liked her... and I was rooting for her.
And then. it started. yawn. But there were still a few that I liked. Ben, the ski dude with the sloe-gin eyes. Ryan, the teacher, who you know every students had a crush on. Wendell, the boy next door, your best guy friend because he's just sooo sweet. And Jerry (whew). The air around that boy just crackles with sexual energy.
I have to admit, I wasn't into JP... the lips creap me out. And he came off as a little cocky. (though, since the show ended, I've revised my opinion a little.) And Febrece gave me the heebie-jeebies. The rest of them I'm fairly indifferent on. (Oh... I do have to mention Keith the welder... liked him, but if anyone seriously thought Jen was going to fall for a blue collar worker...)
So. Then. Last Monday. Jen. The. B.
Now, I have spent the last week reading stuff on the internet, lurking on message boards, trying to understand. And I do agree that she shouldn't have to stay with someone that she doesn't like. But She didn't even TRY. She didn't give poor Jerry a chance. And that's what makes me mad.
She didn't even try... and, we the viewers ... we were invested. It's not that she didn't care about Jerry's feelings, it's that she didn't care about ours. Oh, I know it's silly. And I'm over it, really I am.
But I'm not watching next season. I can't take it.

Survival
So... I had planned on writing a very snarky post about tonight's Survivor. (Do Jeff and Kim think they're headed for RobandAmberville? Really? And do they think that's a new strategy? Gotta love Ashlee and her crushin on Ibraham the Cutie.) I do have to say that I'm so glad that it's back! I was worried about my first reality love for the last couple of seasons.
But then I got a phone call from my step-mom. Her mom passed away tonight and she was crying. Her mom has had Alzheimer's for the past 10 or so years and has been in a nursing home for 6 or 7. She sobbed and said that now she's all alone. Her dad died when she was 29, same age as I was when my dad died. And then my dad, the love of her life, died 5 years ago. She has been so strong and so focused on making it thru each day and I admire her for that strength. I'm just not sure why it seems like the people who are hurting get heaped with more and more until it's just ridiculous. I guess it breaks down to survival... some people can make it all 39 days (or 80 years) and some give up early and become bitter and broken. I believe that if you have had a passionate love in your life, it makes the rough stuff easier to deal with and the great stuff even better. My husband is my best friend and I'm so lucky to have him... I'd better go tell him. Maybe I should call my mom, too.

Trend girl
Yep, that's me. Sad, but true. I'm not sure I actually have anything interesting to say about anything, but I have to give it a try. Everyone else on planet E-Arth has a blog, so here I am. Just like a journal, I guess. And I always had one of those. Especially in middle school. Sadly, I think they were lost during some move... or maybe tossed out of indiference during my 20's. Now that I have a teenager, I wish I had them back. That and the huge Gap bag of notes my friends and I passed in 8th grade. Where did that go? Ahhh, good times.
So... what am I passionate about?
My family. Fab hubby, 2 v.cool daughters, menagerie of 2 cats, 1 hamster, lots of fish. Lots of extended family... all good.
Reality tv... I know- again, trend girl. My hubby says I never met a cult I wouldn't join. But give me my "real" people who are willing to expose themselves to the entire country. I ^heart^ them. Survivor, The Bachelorette, American Idol are all must watches now. Plus, the message boards are fun and fun. I never post, I'm just a lurker, but you can't beat it for entertainment value.
Music...no talent what so ever here, but I love listening to good stuff. I'm fond of the cute singer/songwriter with a guitar type. New favorite: Michael Tolcher... rocking to 'Miracle' right now. Saw him open for Gavin DeGraw recently and he was great. Actually, Gavin is super, too. We met him before the show and he was super nice also. Also listening to: Liz Phair, Kelly Clarkson, Bowling for Soup, REM, and for kid's music, Justin Roberts.
That's it for now... not that anyone but me will read this. I have to go try to be creative in the kitchen. Sigh. Any ideas for dinner?
